Too often, we come into situation with inherent biases that we might not recognize. In the classroom, teachers need to recognize the privileges they bring and ask better questions. Humility in some aspects can make teachers more attuned to the needs of all students, but especially underserved students. When teachers ask good, honest questions of their students in the moments when they don’t understand something they seem more genuine. For students, the person who they see as the beacon of hope or the agent of their oppression (and everything in between) is their teacher. Excellent educators embrace this for themselves and for all of their students.
